EMS codes demystified

It’s no secret that Maine Coons come in elaborate colors and patterns.

But what the heck is with the letters and numbers?!

Let’s break down EMS codes, once and for all.

  1. Each EMS code starts with three capital letters identifying the breed of cat. In our case, “MCO” is for Maine Coon.
  2. The primary color will be listed after the breed code. This is listed as a lowercase letter. For example -n – blacka – blued – rede – creamf – black tortie g – blue tortiew – white Any cat with silver will have an “s” after the color letter. Silver is also called “smoke” in a cat without pattern.
  3. The amount of white is presented by numbers behind the lowercase letters. For example -01- van02- harlequin 03- bicolor 09- any other amount of white
  4. The following numbers indicate the pattern on the cat 11 – shaded12- shell 21 – unspecified tabby22 – blotched tabby23 – mackerel tabby24 – spotted tabby25 – ticked tabby
  5. You may also find some cats listed with their eye color, although not regularly used. For example-61- blue eyed 62- orange eyed63- odd eyed (two different colors)64 – green eyed

With over 85 combinations of colors and patterns, it would be difficult to list them all here. We have included some examples below.
